I’ve spent a good portion of my life outdoors. I grew up in central Pennsylvania with a passion for fishing, hunting and every sport that a young kid could play. As I entered my teens, I began to take fishing more seriously and embarked on regular overnight fishing trips with my friend Gunner. We called it Amazon Fishing, usually working our way upstream a good 5 or 6 miles in two days, fishing every pocket along the way. Those were some of my favorite outdoor experiences as a kid. I moved to Las Vegas after college in 1997 and immediately started exploring Red Rock and Mt Charleston.
Today, I have a garage full of gear for hiking, car camping, backpacking, fly fishing, and the annual UNLV basketball tailgate. I have several day packs, a multitude of CamelBacks, and everything from dutch ovens to ultralight stoves. My affinity for the outdoors is clear to anyone that has ever visited my home.
So this project, Trail Sherpa, has been in the back of my mind for a few years. I hike a few times a month, usually for 5-8 hour trips in Red Rock and Mt Charleston. I have a stack of guide books and a few average websites that I frequent for trail research. What I’ve found is that the books cover the basics and the websites (with just a few exceptions) are just ad plays that provide little if any value.
Lately my attention has turned to the bigger excursions. Pushing my limits. Learning new skills. Taking the path less traveled. Making my own trail! It’s this shift in focus that has finally convinced me to build Trail Sherpa as a way to preserve my experiences and share them with other hikers looking to hit the trail.
