Light Your Fire: Make Your Own Firestarters

created on: 11/17/08 Whether you're doing a bit of late season car camping in the cold and wet or you're heading south to ride a bit more, it's always great to have ready-to-burn fire-makings when you stay at an established campsite. There's nothing worse than pulling into your site after dark and then realizing you have nothing to build a quick fire. Warm friends and s'mores, that's what it's all about.

Here's how to win friends and influence people with your camping savvy! Step-by-step written instructions or, see the process for yourself here.

What you'll need to make your firestarters:

  • Old candles
  • Sawdust, Lint, or Shredded Paper
  • Toilet Paper or Paper Towel Rolls (or a paper egg carton)
  • Old metal can

That's it! Now read what to do with all this stuff, but not before you get one eco-tip for today: don't burn things that aren't natural, i.e. plastics, particle board sawdust (glue holds it together), or nylon webbing: all these things create toxic fumes.

Now, light your fire!

experience has taught me that leaving tissue(runny nose) in your pockets shreds the tissue in the dryer. The dryer collects a wonderful mix of lint and tissue. It was an AH-HA! moment for me. Is as simple as it seems and works great.
