About Me

Spin, schuss, slog, chop, climb, cast, twitch.....these are a few of my favorite things!

Hey, my name is E, and where I live in the Northern Rockies, all you have to do is hand me a fly rod, a mountain bike, my hiking boots, snowshoes, or a set of binoculars, and we’re on our way for a day of adventure in the outdoors. From the time I was a kid, I loved being outside doing anything that anyone would do with me! Some things never change, and I am still at it, always wondering where my next trip or trail will lead me.

So what is it that keeps me coming back for more? It’s the piney, fresh air, the physical and mental challenge of a day on my bike/skis/feet, the solitude, and the wildlife that draw me back time and again to the wild spaces of this world.

How could anyone opt for a day of television re-runs when there are freshies to be had or moose to track, or knobbys to ride? Beats me, but that’s why I am here on Uncooped, you see: because inspiration begets inspiration. You tell your story, and I tell mine, and then we both go out and do our respective gigs, in the place that makes us happy, strong, and smelly. Simple, no?

Riders Through the Snow: The Iditarod Trail Invitational

Alaska Ultra Sport's Iditarod Trail Invitational is the world's longest human powered winter ultra-marathon. Crossing 350 to 1100 miles of frozen Alaskan wilderness, it is a brutal contest that few enter and only about half finish. This year 50 riders and skiers have signed up to take their places at the start line in March 2009. See for yourself in this video from the New York Times. Insanity on wheels. You gotta love it!

Wildlife Encounters on the Trail: Bears

Some of my best moments on the trail have been when I've seen a golden eagle soaring overhead or a Rocky Mountain Goat scrabbling down a cliff or a moose grazing in the willows. I live for this stuff! But I also recognize that wildlife = wild creatures. No matter how much these awe-inspiring creatures seem to tolerate humans: wild is wild. Be prepared for encounters with wildlife and know what to do the next...
