The Northeast is astir with new glades, runs and programs for all abilities. Also sharpen your vocab and learn what the hell a Chondola is.
ME
Sugarloaf
Two new terrain parks are slated, a beginner park on Whiffletree and an advanced park on Haywire. Sidewinder, a new snowboard/skiercross course designed by Olympic snowboardcross champion Seth Wescott, will also open. The course will feature live timing to compare yourself with friends, competitors and Wescott himself. Three newly-marked glade areas also open this season. Opens November 21.
Sunday River
Night skiing has been added and will run on Fri, Sat and holiday nights until 9PM on North Peak and South Ridge. Night skiing is available through purchase of a 12-hour ticket or a night ticket. Sunday River, which features a lateral 8-peak layout, seeks to make travel easier; it’s new Chondola connects the South Ridge base to North Peak, providing access to 6 of Sunday’s 8 peaks. The Chondola replaces a 2-lift,20-minute ride with a direct 7-minute ride. Chondolas feature both gondola cabins and chairlifts to make for comfortable, convenient loading and unloading for all passengers. Began limited lift access October 30.
Saddleback
Three new black diamond runs will be added to the “largest advanced ski complex in the east” (the majority of Saddleback’s black and double black terrain is located together in one bowl on the mountain). The new runs are Black Beauty, Frost Bite and Antula. The area will also receive lift upgrades with the Kennebego T-bar being replaced by a quad chairlift. Hornberg is a new green run set to be added to the beginner section of the mountain. Scheduled to open December 13.
NH
Cannon Mountain
Cannon will add 6 new glades this year aiming at skiers and riders of all abilities. Four expert glades and one intermediate will open on the upper part of the mountain. The sixth glade area will open in Tuckerbrook Family Area. A new trail will also be open in Tuckerbrook.
Loon Mountain
Loon’s first double black diamond Rip Saw opens this season. Escape Route, an intermediate, will also be added. Ten new rails will be added to Loon’s terrain parks.
Cranmore Mountain
Three new trails open this season: Tommy’s Trail, an intermediate off of East Slope; Roundabout an intermediate off of Snow Train; and Gibson Chutes, a glade area off of Gibson. Oomphah Flats will also be added as a connector between Artists Falls and South Slope.
Bretton Woods
Proving that ski slopes aren’t the only way to descend a mountain, Bretton Woods will kick-off Canopy Tours, an adventure that allows guests to descend 1000 feet of vertical to Bretton’s base area using a series of zip lines, suspension bridges and hiking trails. The tours will provide a fun option for non-skiers and will be open year round.
Attitash
A new natural terrain park opens this season.
Crotched Mountain
Solstice a new glade area opens this winter.
Granite Gorge
Several new trails are underway including the beginner’s Glider and Patriot Glades.
Pats Peak
Lights will be added to allow for 100% of Pats Peak’s terrain to be open at night. New glades are also being cut between East Wind and Duster.
NY
Whiteface
Big expansion at Whiteface this season will open up Lookout Mountain for skiing. Miles of new trails are being cut. Here's a look:
-Wilmington Trail--2.2-mi. intermediate trail with views of the town of Wilmington
-Lookout Below--Expert trail off of Wilmington
-Hoyt's High--Expert trail starts at the top of the new Lookout Mountain Triple Chair
-Sugar Valley Glades-63.5 acres of expert glades
Another expert trail is slated for the future.
Gore Mountain
Big development on Burnt Ridge Mountain will add 6 new trails and increase Gore's vert to 2300' (from 2100). The expansion will also make increase Gore's longest continuous run by over 25% to 3.7 miles. Trails as follow:
-Echo--Long intermediate run
-Sagamore-Exhilerating new black diamond
-Cedars--Intermediate run linking the base to the bottom of Burnt Ridge Quad
-Sagamore Glades and Cirque Glades--New glade areas
-Hedges--Access trail running from the top of Burnt Ridge Quad to Twister
Ski Bowl Park will also open, a new terrain park that will also feature a halfpipe.
