Make It a Frosty Fourth: Five North American Ski Resorts Open Into July

Fourth of July at Mammoth

On Father's Day, Snowbird officially brought its lifts to a stop, ending a very long, snowy season. While I haven't actually ridden there since early May, it was still sad to note that the option had expired.

If you're in the Pacific Northwest or northern California--or don't mind a little travel--you still have some skiing time left. Five American resorts plan to keep the lifts turning into July and beyond, meaning that you can spend part of your 4th of July weekend skiing or snowboarding.

Timberline at Mt. Hood and Whistler regularly offer summer skiing thanks to the Palmer Snowfield and Horstman Glacier. This year is no exception for them, but what is an exception is that three other resorts are joining them. Mammoth Mountain will offer skiing through July 5 and Kirkwood will open up for the weekend July 2 through 4. Boreal is opening even later, cranking up the lifts for its July Shred Fest on July 10 and 11. Mt. Hood offers skiing throughout the summer until Labor Day and Whistler offers it until July 25.

So if you've been trying to decide between fireworks, BBQing, camping and going to the beach--throw another unlikely option into the mix--skiing.
