I officially ended my snowboard season yesterday. While I thought snowboarding season was over about two weeks ago, Snowbird received a couple of huge, sickening dumps from mid-week last week through Sunday. The resort reported 7 feet of snow in just 4 days. In late April/early May. Unbelievable. Unfortunately, my camera has a chronic lens error, but Snowbird's picture from May 2 above sums it up pretty well.
I bookended my weekend with a pair of ride days on Friday and Monday and ended the season pretty nicely. The latter was my first day ever riding in May and it might as well have been February. In fact, conditions were what I consider to be the best overall conditions ever.
There was still plenty of fresh powder with clear, blue skies and temperatures around the mid 40's. Plus there was no crowd and an all-but-empty tram. While the relentless sun turned much of the fresh snow into a wet cement, I was able to find soft powder and face shots throughout the day. And groomed runs were soft and near-perfect. Though the majority of lifts had been closed for a few weeks all of my favorite lifts/terrain including the Cirque were open.
While the 'Bird is planning on keeping lifts running until Memorial Day, I think yesterday was the perfect way to call it a season. Anyone else still skiing or snowboarding or have you traded in the P-tex for wheels, paddles or other springtime equipment?
