The idea of ski resorts exxaggerating snow totals to attract business is so intuitive you almost can't get angry at them for doing it. Skiers want good conditions and ski resorts want business, so when the conditions don't exist on their own, it's only natural to indulge a little (still shameful, but only natural). A Dartmouth study even found conclusive evidence of weekend snow exxaggerations.
A recent article in the Vancouver Sun details how snow-report iPhone apps level the playing field by allowing peer-to-peer reports vs. traditional resort-originated reports. Thanks to the Internet and phone apps, skiers and riders can now detail the real conditions. For their part, resorts are being forced to add a bit more honesty to their own reports.
It's an interesting article that's worth a read if you ever found yourself skidding across two inches of dust-on-crust after reading a report of 10 + inches.
