Man Travels to Every Country in the World in Under 7 Years, Not Much To Show For It

created at: 2009-12-02

Despite dressing like a 1970's game show host, Kashi Samaddar, a 55-year-old Indian businessman, is the most well-traveled man alive. He recently concluded a world tour in which he stepped foot in every country on Earth in just six years, 10 months and a week. In doing so, he earned himself a spot in the Guinness Book of World Records. The tour began in 2002 and cost Samaddar 350,000 pounds. Impressive to say the least.

What's not very impressive is the pictures he came back with. Ordinarily, they say that a picture is well worth a thousand words. In the Samaddar's case, they're not even a fraction of that. While word is that he had life-threatening experiences in some of the more virulent places of the world--including an exploding hotel in Kabul, Afghanistan-- his pictures paint a story of a trip that was more boring than a Sunday afternoon at Great Aunt Bertha's. We truly feel bad for close family members that had to sit through the slide show.

To be fair, we don't have Samaddar's entire photo album, but some of the pictures that made their way to the press were less than engaging, especially considering the breadth of the voyage. According to the U.K.'s Daily Mail, they don't get much better, and beautiful locales and popular tourist destinations were routinely eschewed in favor of office cubicles and random bystanders. The image above is the grand souvenir shot of London. This man would be lucky to have a stupid T-shirt.

Okay, that's enough ripping on the photos, the voyage was a truly grand and inspiring feat. Let's just hope Mr. Samaddar's memory is crisp. Check out the in-depth story here.

No question. This is like how I sometimes tell people I've been to Egypt, because I put my foot across the line at a border crossing. Physically being in a place is not the same as experiencing it.

I think the pictures answer that question pretty decisively.

Hmmm...that's interesting. Would you rather spend an hour in every counrty in the world, or spend a lifetime learning all the ins-and-outs of one or two?
