Bergmoench Backpack Bike

created at: 2009-09-29

Here's a creative idea--a bike that folds up into its own backpack. Carry the Bergmoench Backpack Bike by Koga up a steep incline, break it back down into bike form and then ride down. Of course, the complete lack of little conveniences like a seat and drivetrain will make for a bit of a scary ride and limit this bike's utility to the foot-powered downhilling described, but it certainly is an interesting concept. On the bright side, you do get the benefit of footrests, brakes and even an air shock, so you have some control over your own destiny.

If this bike had a drivetrain, it would be a great option for urban commuters and even potentially for backcountry mountain bikers where hike-a-bikes are prevalent. As is though, it's kind of a limited and near-useless contraption--especially for 1499 Euros (app. $2183). If you disagree, you can check out more details at the Bergmoench website. via DesignCrave
