Every Uncooper should have a camera. It doesn't have to be a GREAT camera, just something to record your journeys. To help us all capture those once in a lifetime outdoor moments we turn to photographer Stephen Oachs who shares his 11 tips on how to take better nature and wildlife photographs.
- Miss the eyes and you've missed the shot.
- Use a telephoto lens.
- Use a wide aperture.
- Adjust your shutter speed to stop/show the action.
- Use a flash to fill in shadows.
- Plan for the best light.
- Compose (frame) your shots.
- Shoot with two eyes.
- Anticipate behavior.
- Shoot. Shoot. Shoot.
- Use a tripod.
For elucidation of each tip, visit this page on Stephen's website. I shot the image pictured above last week in the Theodore Roosevelt National Park with my Canon G10. Not the best camera for shooting wildlife, but I got the shot! (Note the prairie dog to the far left of the bison.)
