How to Find Work You Can Be Proud Of

created on: 03/29/08

Does any kid ever write a report about wanting to be an underpaid, bored, fluorescent-light-hypnotized office drone working for some giant soulless corporation when he or she grows up? Of course not. People crave work that is challenging, fulfilling and meaningful, and takes place in a soul-nourishing setting. But how do you find that kind of work?

Here are a few places to start looking. Here you'll find work with nonprofits, socially responsible companies, outdoor education centers, adventure therapy programs, national parks and more. If this post helps someone find a cool job, I would love to hear about it - let us know in the comments.

Care2

BackdoorJobs (I know, I know, it kind of sounds like a porn star recruiting agency. It isn't.)

CoolWorks

Student Conservation Association (great internships with student-loan stipends)

The Association for Environmental and Outdoor Education

Congrats Greg! I'll add my own piece of advice: develop your hobbies. They'll lead you in strange, unexpected directions (that's a good thing)

Good post. I just recently made the switch from a flourescent-light-hypnotized office drone to what can safely be called my dream job, working for a non-profit conservation group.

While the lists above are great resources, I can also add my own experience: I would not have gotten this job if I hadn't spent the last 2 or 3 years volunteering with other non-profits groups in the local conservation community.

That work was fun and rewarding in itself -- a good outlet from my dry day job -- but it also helped me build a signficant amount of experience (most small non-profits will give a volunteer as much work as they want in whatever field they're interested in) and helped me meet a lot of people... one of whom ended up hiring me.

So, that's my $.02. Results may vary. :)
