About Me

The Native Americans, the mountain men, the French voyageurs, the pioneers, the frontiersmen carried such a wealth of knowledge and capability in their heads, on their backs and in their packs. Modern invention and innovation have made the old, tried and true techniques and methods lighter, faster, more durable and easier. In my daily life outdoors and as a leader with the Boy Scouts, I enjoy preserving the ancient ways by combining them with the modern possibilities, and then sharing the results.

My personal totem is the black bear, a powerful and yet reserved creature able to make his way with whatever he encounters along the way; adaptable and versatile.

My most recent purchasing consideration concerns an ultralight hiking staff. Price is a consideration as the lightest and best designed poles do not cheap. But, even more of a consideration is the question of replacing my old realiable pole that I carved myself and have carried lo these many years.

Add a light to your sleeping bag

Black Crater unveiled a small new light built into a cord lock at the recent Outdoor Retailer Summer Market 2008. It works just like any cord lock when placed on the cord of anything from a sleeping bag to a stuff sack to a hoodie, but also keeps a three-beam-setting light handy on the bag, sack or garment.   The little eight-gram light is water resistant.
